There's something that always moves me when I receive a used climbing rope in the workshop. It arrives crumpled, marked, sometimes still covered in chalk, and I know that before it landed in my hands, it had a whole life. It's that story I want to tell you today, the one that goes from the cliff to the belt you might be wearing right now.
A rope experiences a lot
Before meeting me, a climbing rope has often seen dozens of outings, routes in Belgium, southern France or elsewhere, cushioned falls, belays, rappels, sometimes even a scare or two. It has been the thread of trust between a climber and their belayer, the one on which one stakes their safety without thinking. And then one day, after taking too many falls or reaching the recommended age limit, it must be retired from use. That's when many ropes end up in the trash, even though they still have so much to offer.
The second life begins with meticulous sorting
When a rope arrives at PAYA, I take the time to observe it and check its condition along its entire length. I look at the color, the texture, the flexibility it still has. Each rope has its own character, its own nuances, and that's precisely what makes each piece I create unique. I then cut out the most beautiful and solid sections, those that can become a belt, a strap for your camera, or a small everyday keychain.
From the cliff to the workshop, in Liège
It is here, in my workshop, that the transformation takes on its full meaning. I sew, I assemble, I test the solidity of each piece by hand, as if it were going back to the cliff. I like to think that I am extending the story of this rope rather than ending it. It protected someone for years, and now it will accompany someone else daily, in another form.
A piece with a soul
When you wear a PAYA belt, you're not just wearing a handmade accessory. You're wearing the memory of a cliff you may never know, the trace of a climber who trusted this rope. It's the same story for our camera straps, designed to accompany your own adventures, or for our keychains, subtle daily nods to upcycling. And if you don't yet know which piece to choose, or for whom, know that a PAYA gift card allows the person you're treating to choose their own, with its own story.
If you have any questions about the origin of a rope, how I work, or if you simply want to discuss upcycling, don't hesitate to visit the contact us page; I always reply with pleasure. And if you feel like discovering the piece that will carry the next story, head to the shop.
